Paul –
Great day, great coach. Thanks Jim
Mike Raffe –
Thanks for your patience Paul and Jim and great coaching from Jim, I now know what I should be doing to get airborne properly and more importantly back to the ground safely! This knowledge will allow me to practice and develop my ability in this area. A great couple of hours and thoroughly enjoyable.
Chris –
Excellent session, thanks very much to Jim for highly knowledgeable (and patient) teaching in the art of off road. Some immediate improvements for me. Recommended.
Joel Edser –
I had a 2 hour 1:1 beginners coaching session for my 18th birthday with Jim in the Surrey Hills and it was a great introduction. He pitched it exactly right, was really encouraging and we did some cool intense stuff between the trees… plus now I’m equipped not only for Surrey Hills trails, but I know what to do if I meet a bear while MTBing in Utah. A great experience!
Richard Mason –
I’ve just had an excellent drops and jumps coaching session with Andy Pittson. I learnt a huge amount in just a 2 hour session
Andy is a truly excellent coach, with a relaxed manner, very clear and understandable instructions and all tailored to the individual. Highly recommended.
Anna –
Thanks Jim for a great session – I developed my confidence in cornering and enjoyed learning how to tackle drop offs, which I’ll continue to practice. There was a good mix of skills coaching and trail riding, presented in a fun, clear and relaxed way. Highly recommend. Thanks again
Toby –
Many thanks to the great Marmalade team for the amazing session – learnt a lot (many bad habits am now trying to unpick). Will definitely be coming back for round two!
Alan Mcternan –
Had a great day last weekend being coached by Andy. Although I have ridden MTB for a few years now I have had no real formal coaching and plenty of rough edges. Andy really helped tutor me in how to corner, where to put your weight, body position (and not to forget to mention to look ahead). So would recommend this to anyone at any level on the trails as a way of really improving your riding. Exactly what I was looking for – thanks Marmalade.
Jonathan Willis –
Fantastic day with Andy in the Surrey Hills. The morning skills session was very valuable, and Andy had an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the trails which made for a very enjoyable afternoon ride
David Coombs –
Andy was an excellent teacher and throughout our morning we picked up several new skills and really gained some confidence in pumping turns and leaning the bike for traction. We did a short spell on drops and about 30 minutes on jumps. I would certainly book again because it has opened up a whole new dimension to my bike rides. Just wish I’d taken this skills course 20 years ago.
Trevor Jones –
Had a fantastic morning skills lesson with Jim Barrow in Houghton forest. Weather was a bit sketchy and trails a bit slick, but this added to the session, ironed out a lot of creases and really finding the flow by the end of the session. Plenty of new techniques to practice!

Monday was fun!
A session on Jumps and Drops with Jim of Marmalade MTB.
We had booked a coaching session with Jim from Marmalade MTB, originally for 2 weeks ago. That was rearranged due to heavy rain and hail just before we were setting off, a decision we didn’t regret when there were two more heavy showers in the afternoon. Really not keen on wet trails, especially when wanting to learn about Jumps and Drops!
We are now trying to understand what we are doing, and were out practising again today on the familiar trails at Surrey Hills.
Thanks to Jim for the photos and videos.

Had a fantastic morning at Stanmer Park with Jim and Andy (despite the weather!). I’d booked the Trail Fundamentals as despite being a regular mountain biker, recent time out of the saddle due injuries meant that my confidence had suffered. I’d booked with Jim but was lucky to get Andy as well and I can’t recommend them enough! They were both patient, knowledgeable, helpful and made the whole session a fun experience & I’m already booked up for a guided ride and will be looking at a further 1:1 later in the year.
Jeff Grimes –
This was my second 121 with Jim and he is an excellent and patient teacher. We reviewed what he’d taught me in session 1 and then added some new skills and techniques. He has given me a lot more confidence and I am enjoying the MTB challenge. I’ll be ready for the next level I hope after a summer of practising what he’s taught me.
Ben McLachlan –
I had an excellent 1:1 session last week with Jim at Stanmer Park, working on achieving a better flow on the trails. Jim was really friendly and I felt that I made good progress in the session. I put it into practice today when riding in the woods on my own and felt a definite improvement. Recommended!
Steve West –
A couple of weeks ago I had a day 1-2-1 coaching with Jim on the Surrey Hills. I took MTBing up again during first lockdown having had a break for several years. I was getting better, or certainly quicker, but I have to say a day with Jim apart from being hugely enjoyable has resulted in a step-change in my biking. We worked on a small number of things, seemingly minor, but they’ve made a huge difference. Jim is obviously an excellent and very experienced rider, but key was his coaching style (relaxed, unpressured, clear) and his analysis of my riding. I would also say the support from Sean around the day, from the initial chat through to the logistics, was brilliant. Highly recommended!
Fiona Bates –
I had a great coaching session with Jim! He was very patient, explained and demonstrated the technical aspects needed for single track riding. Most importantly it was great fun and enjoyable. I now feel 100% more confident to tackle the down hills with some degree of control ( after a bit more practice !?) Thanks Team Marmalade
Rebecca Davies-Cooke –
My husband and I had a fantastic morning’s riding with Sean around the hills of Surrey. While we knew the basics of the ready position, Sean helped to cement this in our minds and demonstrate the importance of body position. He gave us loads more confidence to deal with everything the more technical trails could throw at us. It also helps that Sean is a pleasure to spend time with, and the hours just flew by. We’ll definitely be using Sean again to help us develop our skills even further.
Kerry Rogers –
I booked a MTB session with Marmalade for my husband. Sean was really helpful with my questions and the communication for brilliant.
Below is my husbands review:
Following my session with Jim at Marmalade MTB I wanted to say a quick shout to the team there. Strong communication, safe practice and they were able to establish quickly the areas I wanted coaching on and also added some additional pointers I hadn’t even considered.
Thoroughly recommended and I have been riding for 15 years and had several coaching sessions with other providers!

Went out with Jim last Sunday for 2hrs of coaching which was bought for me as a Christmas present. I’m a regular MTB rider but never realised that my riding had plateaued and could be taken to the next level. Can’t recommend this 1-2-1 session enough. He found out what I wanted to get out of the day and the things I wanted to concentrate on and we covered them all. Took away so much from this day with the help of an expert observing me and showing where I could improve. This is great money spent as my riding has improved so much – should of done this 10 years earlier!
Sarah Miller –
As a Christmas present to myself, I booked on the Rookie to rider course which was unfortunately cancelled because of COVID. Sean was keen to support my desire to feel more confident off road so suggested we change to a 1- 2-1 session instead. We met in Stanmer Park on the wettest day in July so far. Sean immediately made me feel relaxed even though I’d turned up on my trusty 15 year old trek! We disappeared off onto the South Downs at a pace that suited me. He talked me through different techniques and geared everything around my current skill level and fitness. I had such an amazing morning despite getting completely soaked. Sean’s enthusiasm for cycling was clear as was his enthusiasm for getting other people excited about cycling. I spent the whole morning riding up and down the hills smiling like a Cheshire Cat. If you are sitting on the sidelines reading this and wondering whether these courses are worth the money, I’d say go for it! They’re priceless.

After a half day session earlier in the summer to go through basic skills on an amazing Guided Ride with Marmalade. I did a day of coaching and guided riding on Single Track with Jim this week.
Jim was friendly, welcoming, patient and generally brilliant!
We covered lots of skills, with plenty of time to practice them, and then went on a Single Track adventure around Stanmer Park to put it all in to practice.
Great fun and well worth the time and money. I am looking forward to my next Marmalade Adventure.
Elliott Herbert –
Great day with Jim @ Marmalade today. Started off with a coaching session helping me improve my technique and learn some new skills before we headed off for a guided ride around Surrey Hills.
They day was a good confidence booster and I’m eager to apply what I learnt on my local trails.
Going to sleep well tonight!
Mark Bennett –
Sean’s and the whole Marmalade team’s passion for mountain biking is infectious. Having spent some time being guided and coached by them it is very clear they really enjoy sharing their knowledge of mountain biking and their love of the Great British countryside.
We have just had the most amazing guided ride with Sean, being shown some of the best cross country mountain bike riding the South Downs has to offer.
If you are looking to progress your off-road riding or want to be shown some amazing places to ride we would thoroughly recommend Marmalade MTB.
Mark & Sara.
Bruce Ferguson –
A whole jar of Marmalade fun! We celebrated my 60th birthday in the Surrey hills. We were with Jim in the morning to develop some skills and techniques, and then Sean came along in the afternoon too for some guided trail riding. Jim’s coaching was spot on, and with plenty of chances to practise. The afternoon trails were just great, swooping from one single track to another – some technical and rooty stuff with smooth fast tracks too. Oh yes a bit of climbing built in!!
Thank you so much both of you, the day was just as I had asked for and we will be back!
I will be flying the Marmalade flag!
Bruce & Sue
Vanessa Racity –
Sean’s gentle and non judgmental approach really worked for me – he’s a great teacher, very knowledgeable and good chatter! I achieved far more than I expected. Highly recommend him -and look forward to doing a group ride when things return to normal.

Absolutely fantastic! My skills session with Jim was fun, relaxed and most importantly productive. I came away feeling like I’d made some real improvements and can’t wait to get back out on the trails and get them really dialed! Thanks again! I’ll be back!
