Description

It is hard to believe, but May 2026 marks exactly ten years since Marmalade MTB first headed out onto the trails. While our roots are firmly planted in the South Downs, the Marmalade story officially began as a business a decade ago in the Surrey Hills.

To mark this milestone, we are heading back to our ‘Day 1’ launch site for a big birthday bash. We have partnered with the Hurtwood Hideout in Holmbury St Mary to create a central event hub for the weekend.

The Riding We have designed a variety of guided rides to ensure there is something for everyone. On Friday, we will depart as one large group for a commemorative photo on top of Holmbury Hill before splitting into sub-groups. You can choose from a scenic cross-country (XC) and gravel loop, an intermediate Singletrack Adventure, or an advanced Trailblazer session. On Saturday, we will keep things relaxed with a social loop and a traditional pub lunch.

The Celebration Friday evening is all about the social side of cycling. We will be hosting a party at the Hideout featuring a pub style quiz, plenty of birthday cake, and a few stories from the last ten years.

Important Information We’re arranging the riding and the venue. Food and drink at the Hurtwood Hideout (including Friday night pizza) is something you’ll pay for yourself. If you’re staying the night in the Surrey Hills, you’ll need to make these arrangements and payments. We have provided a list of local accommodation recommendations in the tabs below to help you plan your stay.

Select your preferred combination of riding and socialising from the booking options to secure your place.

Thursday night: For those staying at the Hurtwood Inn (village of Peaslake) or other local accommodation, please send me a WhatsApp message and we can discuss the non-driving options for you to meet the group at 9am on Friday morning.

The venue and evening celebrations: For those who have not visited the Hideout before, it is now a privately owned bunkhouse (formerly a YHA) and cafe set within a beautiful woodland. You can watch this video from the 9-second mark to get a feel for the setting and the seating available.

  • Showers: If you are not staying locally and to save you going home and returning, free showers are available at the Hideout. Please remember to bring a towel, wash kit, and a change of clothes.
  • Seating and layers: There is plenty of seating, but feel free to bring your own cushioned chairs if you prefer. We will have fire pits and canopies ready, but as it is a woodland setting, please bring warm layers for the evening. The Hideout will be open to the general public in the evening and we will be sharing this space.
  • Food and drink: From 18:00, the pizza horsebox will be open for wood-fired pizzas, draught beer, and coffee. They accept card payments. You are also welcome to bring your own food and drink to supplement what is on offer.

Capturing the day: We have secured the services of a talented videographer, Oli from OB Media, to capture the day. He worked with us on the Mason Wilding Ride in 2024, so please bring all of the colour and plenty of smiles.

  • 10:00 – 12:30: Social morning ride

Bike choice

E-bikes or manual mountain bikes are all welcome, whether you bring your own or hire from our friends at Just Pedal – Hurtwood.

The routes are traditional mountain bike rides. There will be fun bumpy descents, rooty forest trails and wide-open double tracks.

The rides can be enjoyed on a conventional or electric mountain bike. Choose the ride that is right for your level of experience and fitness, then bring your choice of machine. Marmalade rides have a friendly welcoming atmosphere, and e-bike riders who find themselves first up the hill are always patient and understanding of those relying on human-power alone.

Ensure your bike of choice is maintained and ready to ride, and please pack a spare mech hanger with your usual trail pack spares.

  4. James Allsopp

Awesome couple of days with Sean and the Mob, well organised great guiding from Jim on the trailblazer ride. Thanks again for the invite

  5. Peter Long

I’m the idiot with his hands in the air in the top photo. Thanks to a pretty personal invite from Sean I thought the Surrey Hills needed a visit, especially as I hadn’t been back there for ten years. I paid up and got pretty excited as the ride day got closer.
    The ride was so
    so
    so
    good!

The day was absolutely superb! The pace, the itinerary, the people, all top notch. And this was not an easy ride for Marmalade to manage, there were so many people riding, many travelling huge distances to get there. The guides kept the groups together, kept everyone chatting and made sure everyone had a good time.

Speaking of the guides, they are just very special people. I don’t want to gush too much, but they really are some super special people. The projects and things they do outside of Marmalade are quite inspiring.

All in all, this was one of the best rides I’ve ever done. If you normally ride on your own and are unsure about going on a group ride, then get yourself out with Marmalade. I can’t recommend it enough.

Finally, I’d like to thank Sean again for a great ride and to congratulate him on creating such an amazing company. There is a reason he’s been doing this for ten years!

  6. Paul Flux

A fun and friendly celebration of ten years of Marmalade! Great to meet up with so many friends that I’ve ridden with on past trips, and ride some awesome trails in the Surrey Hills. Well worth the long drive from ‘oop North!

  7. Michael Lomax

Another great day with Sean and his colleagues. A very happy event meeting up with so many friends from multiple trips making this 10th anniversary a worthy success. Good luck for the next 10 years!
