Returning for 2024

Marmalade riders told us how much they enjoyed our 35 mile tour of the Purbeck Hills, Studland and the stunning Jurassic Coast. So we’ve brought it back into our 2024 schedule.

There are castles, cliff edge trails, ancient history and beachside singletrack – all beginning with a trip on the ferry from Poole. What a day out!

Description

Back for 2024

Welcome to our Jurassic Purbeck Big MTB Day Out: a cross-country ride that will take you mountain biking on the Purbeck Hills, towards the stunning Jurassic Coast of Kimmeridge Bay. This area of Dorset really is beautiful. The ancient history of Corfe Castle and the surrounding villages intertwine seamlessly with natural wonders of the Old Harry Rocks and the coastline.

This mini-adventure starts with us cycling to the Sandbanks chain ferry that will take us across Poole Harbour. Now on the Studland, we will explore the beachside singletrack of the golf course, before taking on the open trails up towards Corfe Castle. From here you will definitely need a strong set of legs, as we take you on a westbound loop.

We branch out across Corfe Common towards the village of Kingston before the eye-popping Styre Head. Just as we finish lapping up the sea views, it’s time to continue and thrash along the Hardy Way to Kimmeridge Bay. Next up, if we can drag you away from the Jurassic coastal views, is the the return to Corfe Castle via the random Grange Arch and the undulating Ridgeway Hill. Suitably refuelled at the quaint Model Village Tea Rooms after the amazing Knowle Hill descent, our journey takes in more epic sea views and the Old Harry Rocks of the Studland. The final blast along the natural singletrack before the return ferry back to Sandbanks for the well earned post-ride refreshments.

What to expect

You’ll need to have a good level of fitness to be able to enjoy this day out. The riding is a mixture of cross-country on single and doubletrack bridleways and the fun and flowing heathland trails. The terrain and trails we will use are not very technical, but they will provide an exciting mixture for all levels.

If you are still not sure whether this ride is for you, then please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

The area and the trails

Isle of Purbeck mountain biking is all about the great mix of sea views, clifftop trails and the rolling bridleways of the Purbeck Hills. There are around 7 big climbs with big open views to keep the eyes happy and the fast descents with jaw-dropping back drops to banish the climbing woes.

Riding with Marmalade

We pride ourselves on creating the perfect vibe that makes everyone feel comfortable and confident. Combine a fun and relaxed atmosphere with Marmalade’s expert knowledge and professionalism, and we we will guarantee you the best day out discovering the trails of the Purbeck Hills.

Bike choice

This route is a traditional cross-country mountain bike ride. There will be fun bumpy descents, rooty forest trails and wide-open pastures. So a hardtail or short travel full suspension mountain bike would be perfect. Big travel bikes are welcome – just be prepared for some extra effort.

This ride can be enjoyed on a conventional mountain bike, e-bike or gravel bike. If this ride is right for your level of experience and fitness, then bring your choice of machine. Marmalade rides have a friendly welcoming atmosphere, and e-bike riders who find themselves first up the hill are always patient and understanding of those relying on human-power alone.

Ensure your bike of choice is maintained and ready to ride, and please pack a spare mech hanger with your usual trail pack spares. For e-bikes please consider bringing a spare battery or range extender if you feel your power consumption may call for one.

Sean has done it again with a brilliant day out – fantastic scenery and excellent trails with the traditional Marmalade hallmark of relaxed yet expert guidance. Not to be missed.

  2. John Reeves

What a great ride !!! I’ve ridden and walked around Purbeck before but Marmalade knew so many new trails and loops. It was a really hot day, so Sean adapted the ride to account for the unplanned heatwave (much appreciated) but still delivered some hard climbs, tricky/fast descents and awesome views. This is my fourth ride with these guys and this is one of my favourites.

  3. Mark Bennett

I have just had my best xc ride yet! 35 miles of the most fantastic trails on the Marmalade MTB Jusassic Purbeck Big MTB Day Out, expertly guided by Sean. A perfect combination of challenging climbs, amazing descents and simply stunning 360 degree views all ride long. Can’t wait to do it again!
