Ask anyone if time in the outdoors is good for children, and few will disagree. “Of course! Get out there!” we all chorus.
Most of us know that outside adventures should be a big part of children’s lives.
But with so many things to do, and often with limited time, what’s the best way for children and young people to pick an outdoor activity to enjoy?
As you’d very well expect, we’re here to wave the flag for mountain biking!
Let’s look at why we think off-road cycling should be on the list for children and parents:
1. Mountain biking gets you into nature
Trees. Plants. Dirt. Maybe even a sight of a deer, a rabbit or a buzzard. Riding a bike off-road takes children into environments they can easily miss in urban settings. Leave the towns, the noise and the car park behind. Come back dusty – or maybe muddy – with a big smile.
2. Mountain biking helps children learn skills
Unlike some sports, mountain biking doesn’t just favour the biggest or strongest. There’s so much to learn – about gears, brakes, body positioning and technique. The most accomplished and fun-loving mountain bikers aren’t the strongest. They’re those who’ve taken the opportunity to learn how to make decisions, how to make mistakes and how to learn on the trail. That’s all part of the fun – and there’s a real sense of satisfaction as it all comes together.
3. Mountain biking teaches children how to think about risk
Here’s a tricky one. We all want children to be safe. But all know there are important things for children to learn about how they consider risk, how they keep themselves safe and about how to decide what’s right for them. Mountain biking is a brilliant way to build these life skills, boosting confidence and rewarding children who test the waters outside their comfort zone. And with qualified leaders on hand, they’re not going alone.
4. Mountain biking offers fitness in an enjoyable way
Just like adults, children have their own preferences for sport and exercise. Some love sports like swimming and football, while others really don’t engage with these activities, finding them boring or frustrating. Introduce one of these youngsters to mountain biking and often we see them light up. Children – like grown-ups – need to find the sport that makes them happy.
5. Mountain biking is fun
Sometimes, the best reason to do something is the simplest. Mountain biking really is so much fun! Whooshing through trees, sweeping round corners, splashing through puddles. Every ride is a mini-adventure, and adventures are there to be enjoyed.
So, if you’re thinking mountain biking could be on the activity list for your child, here are our tips of what to look out for:
1. Qualified, experienced instructors
While you can simply try taking your child mountain biking yourself, the professional input of trained leaders and coaches can transform the experience with fun and safety.
2. Off-road locations
Any form of cycling can offer children a learning experience, but riding on off-road trails removes concerns about traffic and road safety.
3. Local trail knowledge
There are so many places to enjoy mountain biking. But it takes an expert local guide to tailor a ride for maximum enjoyment – especially with young or inexperienced riders.
4. Options for parents and carers
If you’d love your child or grandchild to enjoy a mountain biking experience but you won’t be riding with them, what will you do while they’re on the trails? How about a walk among the trees, or just a cup of coffee in a calm woodland café? Sounds better than an echoey swimming pool or draughty sideline, right?
5. Access to real mountain bikes
Mountain biking does need the right equipment, so look for expertise that will help your child get rolling on a safe, correctly sized, real mountain bike. Whether you’re buying or renting, speak to true experts to ensure your youngster hits the trails with the right gear.
