A truly unique series of four consecutive and progressive off-road rides on the South Downs that will introduce you to the amazing world of mountain biking. We will open your door to our expertise and passion through these superb and fun, fully guided rides by our professional MTB leaders.

Welcome to the very start of your mountain biking journey. Across the four weeks of this introductory series, our passionate team will provide you with the perfect foundation to discover your passion for MTB and adventure. Until now, there has not been any professional courses for beginner mountain biking in Brighton and the surrounding areas. Our fully qualified mountain bike leaders will support you across the four consecutive rides by creating the perfect fun atmosphere and passing on invaluable advice and guidance.

From Zero to MTB Hero

Regardless if you are unfit or have not cycled for decades nor have you ever ridden off-road, this series is designed specifically for you. Like many people in this modern world, you maybe seeking a life-changing hobby that will open the door to a new you. So providing you can ride a bike and are over-18, then you are welcome to sign up for this brand new initiative.

Our aim is simple, and that is to provide you with everything you need. Even if you do not own a bike, then we can arrange bike hire for you (See Below), or we are more than happy to chat over the phone or email to advise you on a new purchase.

The area and the trails

Each one of these progressive rides will take part on the South Downs in and around the Brighton and Worthing area. We will explore traffic free gravel tracks, ancient lush woodland and the Roman roads of yesteryear that criss-cross our stunning national park. Not forgetting the eye-popping panoramic vistas on top of the hills that provide amazing backdrops and stunning sea views.

Combine this super fun and relaxed atmosphere with our expert knowledge and professionalism we will guarantee you the best day out on your bike to discover the trails of the South Downs National Park.

MTB bike hire

Beginner mountain biking in Brighton could not be any easier with or without a suitable bike. If you are visiting family and friends without your pride and joy or simply want to give this a go but do not own a mountain bike, then we can arrange a day hires through our local partners Chalk Pit Trails and or Hassocks Community Cycle Hire.

  • Meet / finish point: Tom Foolery, Cafe and Coffee Shop, Shoreham By-Sea
  • Nearest train station: Shoreham By-Sea
  • Meet time: 10.00 am
  • Duration: We have all day, if we need it!
  • Format of the day:
    • Introductions over coffee*
    • Bike set-up and fit adjustments
      • Saddle height and cockpit
    • Gentle off-road ride on the traffic free and flat Downs Link cycle path which starts in Shoreham
      • Mid-ride cafe stop* in either the quaint village of Steyning or Stan’s Bike Shack in Partridge Green
  • Length of ride: 5-10 miles (all flat)
  • On ride advice and tips:
    • Understanding your mountain bike
      • Components and function
    • The Ready Position
    • Adjusting your gears
  • Number of riders: 8 (max.)
    • This will be same riders as the other weeks

  • Meet / finish point: Tom Foolery, Cafe and Coffee Shop, Shoreham By-Sea
  • Nearest train station: Shoreham By-Sea
  • Meet time: 10.00 am
  • Duration: We have all day, if we need it!
  • Format of the day:
    • Chit-chat over coffee*
    • Gentle warm up along the Downs Link cycle path that starts in Shoreham
      • Introduce a couple of of non-technical climbs and descents to take us up onto the South Downs and back down again
      • Mid-ride cafe stop* or packed lunch* with a view
  • Length of ride: 9-13 miles
  • On ride advice and tips:
    • Using your gears
    • The ‘Track Stand’
    • Puncture repair
  • Number of riders: 8 (max.)
    • This will be same riders as the other weeks

  • Meet / finish point: It’s a mystery
    • Don’t worry, you’ll all be informed by email after the second ride!
    • All depends on how we are doing as a group and what we fancy!
    • It will be within the Brighton to Worthing area
  • Meet time: 10.00 am
  • Duration: We have all day, if we need it!
  • Format of the day:
    • Catch up over coffee*
    • Another superb ride that will provide great views and exhilarating adventure
    • Of course there will be a packed lunch or cafe option!
    • Essential trail-pack contents
  • Length of ride: 10-15 miles
  • On ride advice and tips:
    • Effective braking
    • Repairing a tear in your tyre
  • Number of riders: 8 (max.)
    • This will be same riders as the other weeks

  • Meet / finish point: Stanmer Park Tea Rooms, Brighton
  • Nearest train station: Falmer
  • Meet time: 10.00 am
  • Duration: We have all day, if we need it!
  • Format of the day:
    • Catch up over coffee*
    • An introduction to MTB singletrack trail riding after a gentle warm-up around the stunning park
      • Mid-ride refreshments in the tea-rooms*
  • Length of ride: 8-12 miles
  • On ride advice and tips:
    • Fundamentals of trail riding
    • Repairing a snapped chain
  • Number of riders: 8 (max.)
    • This will be same riders as per the previous weeks

  • The minimum expectation is that you are able to ride a bicycle and able to operate it in the correct manner
    • The intention of these guided rides is not to teach you how to ride a bicycle
  • You have no existing medical conditions that would hinder or prevent you from taking part in physical exercise
  • These consecutive rides have been designed to be progressive in both fitness and the level of terrain to be encountered
    • Therefore each week we will look to introduce elements such as hills and differing terrain to build on your fitness, improve  your bike-handling skills and increase your confidence

    • This is why on Week 1, the route is completely flat
    • You can ride at your own pace
    • Your leader will create and encourage a supportive and relaxed atmosphere
  • You have your own suitable mountain bike (Hybrid and budget bicycles are not suitable for this ride)

  • The trails will include features such as roots, small to long rollable slopes and loose rocks. All of which are rollable
  • All the trails will have options to ride around features that you do not feel comfortable riding
  • You are aged 18 and over unless accompanied by an adult also participating on these rides
  • If this sounds a little beyond your current skill and fitness level, please contact us for other options.

* without these you will not be able to take part in the guided ride. Our guides carry an extensive kit to assist with trail-side repairs
